Africana Studies is the systematic study of the historical, cultural, intellectual and social development of people of African descent, the societies of which they are a part, and their contributions to world civilization. Its principal geographic domains are the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, the African continent and increasingly western Europe where large black communities reside. The field features a diversity of approaches, intellectual and practical interests, and draws upon the humanistic, social and behavioral sciences in its interdisciplinary framework.

Mission
The department's mission is to contribute through research, teaching and service to the quality of life in society, particularly in urban America.

It also seeks to serve as a forum for academic inquiry into the vast range and variety of the black intellectual tradition.

Furthermore, our purpose is to generate knowledge that furthers the growth of the field, generates positive attitudes and promotes an appreciation of black life and development.

Career Opportunities in Africana Studies
Interdisciplinary research and teaching programs in Africana Studies prepare students for professional careers in human services, education, law, business, community development, journalism; and more generally for roles in the public sector, in central cities and urban institutions, or roles that involve intercultural or intergroup relations as well as international affairs. Majors and minors in Africana Studies are also prepared for graduate (including doctoral studies in the humanistic, social and behavioral sciences where the focus of study is, especially but not only, on the black world.
