PROGRAMS

The ELI offers intensive and non-intensive programs on the main campus, and special classes at the Oakland Center of Wayne State University throughout the year, with classes beginning in September, January, May, and June.

Special Classes and Workshops

A unique aspect of the ELI is specialized classes in:

  • Pronunciation improvement
  • Vocabulary improvement
  • Reading enhancement
  • Business and technical writing
  • English for Special Purposes
  • Focused workshops on all aspects of language learning

    Intensive Program

    For those seriously interested in improving their English and academic skills and preparing for university study in a relatively short period of time, the ELI provides the services and benefits of the only intensive English language program in metropolitan Detroit. This intensive program consists of up to 24 class hours per week of beginning through advanced instruction. Beginning and intermediate classes teach communicative skills, integrating listening, speaking and pronunciation in one module and reading, writing and grammar in a second weeklong module. Advanced classes continue to reinforce basic skills while emphasizing academic skills, including:

    • Research paper writing
    • Responding to readings
    • Note-taking
    • Library skills
    • Word processing
    • Essay test-taking

    ELI 8-Week Summer Session

    • Small classes with highly experienced instructors
    • TOEFL preparation available
    • Business communication and academic preparation available
    • Computer-assisted language learning
    • University placement assistance available
    • Group rates available
    • Audio and computer laboratories
    • Athletic and recreational facilities
    • Safe, affordable, and convenient housing
    • Detroit Spring/Summer Events:  Detroit Jazz Festival, Detroit Grand Prix, Gold Cup Hydroplane race, art fairs, and much more!

     

    A transition program allows advanced students to take credit-bearing academic courses at Wayne State University while participating in classes at the ELI. All courses integrate American culture with preparation for academic work.




 

Non-Intensive Program

The ELI Non-Intensive Program offers afternoon and evening classes for students whose schedule is more limited or for
those interested in more specialized training. Courses and services available include:

  •   Part-time students
  •   Student and faculty Spouses
  •   International teaching assistants
  •   Medical, business, and technical professesionals

Special programs and workshops can also be developed to meet the particular needs of businesses and institutions in the community. In addition, the language lab is equipped with a wide variety of audio and video materials available for improving oral and written communication.
